For me, it didn’t take long to awaken from my childhood fantasies and find myself, by sheer coincidence, castrated and stuffed into a thick burlap sack carried by my mother. I was nine years old when my mother carried me on her hunched back, far from all the dreams I knew, and walked with me toward the road leading east to (Abyssinia).
At that time, my mother didn’t want me to climb onto her back and wrap my arms around her neck as children usually do in moments of recklessness. She explained that spreading my legs would worsen my wounds. So, she forced me to curl up inside the sack, tied me to her back as the village men tie sacks of barley, and took an unfamiliar dirt path, preceded by a group of elderly men, women, and children.
