When I ask this group of people about the feminist books or magazines they read, or when I inquire about the feminist discussions they have heard and the feminist activists they know, they tell me that everything they have heard about feminism is nothing more than a cliché. They have never actually engaged with the feminist movement and have no idea what is happening in reality.
Most of them believe feminism is simply a group of angry women who want to imitate men. They do not see feminism as a rights-based movement striving for gender equality. When I talk about feminism as I personally know it—up close and through my own experience—they listen attentively. Yet, as soon as our conversation ends, they rush to tell me that I am different, that I am not like the “real” feminists—the angry ones who hate men.
At that moment, I make sure to tell them that I am, in fact, a true feminist, as radical as one can be. And if they dare to approach feminism, they will realize that it is not what they imagined.
