Sinclair Lewis (1885–1951) was the first American writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. He gained international recognition for his novels, which criticized the weaknesses he observed in American society.
Harry Sinclair Lewis was born on February 7, 1885, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, and graduated from Yale University in 1908. While working as a journalist, he published his first novel, *Our Mr. Wrenn*, in 1914. The book is a gently satirical account of a meek New York office worker on a trip to Europe.
In 1925, Lewis released *Arrowsmith*, a novel that explores the disillusionment of an idealistic young doctor as he battles corruption, envy, vanity, and harm. The book won the Pulitzer Prize in 1926, but Lewis declined the award, possibly because he believed he should have received it earlier.
