However, her family forces her to marry someone she does not love from the same social class. The girl flees, and the events of the novel take her through many twists and turns, between overwhelming love, lost hope, unexpected betrayal, and dramatic transformations that do not cease until the novel reaches its final word. Due to its masterful plot and engaging dramatic structure, the novel was adapted into a film in 1955 and then into a drama series in 1976.
